If you've spent any time looking into anti-ageing skincare, you've probably come across both of these on their own. Green tea shows up in serums and supplements. Red light therapy shows up in masks, panels, and clinic menus. What's less talked about is that they work on wrinkles through two completely different pathways, which is exactly why pairing them makes sense rather than being just a marketing mash-up.
This article breaks down what the clinical research actually says about each one, what happens when you combine them, and how to build a realistic at-home routine.
Why Skin Wrinkles in the First Place

Wrinkles form when two things happen at once. Existing collagen and elastin break down faster than the skin can replace them, and oxidative stress from UV exposure and everyday environmental damage speeds up that breakdown. The enzymes responsible for chewing through collagen are called matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs, and they get switched on by free radicals generated through sun exposure and ageing.
Any strategy that genuinely improves wrinkles has to do one of two things: slow down the breakdown, or speed up new collagen production. This is where green tea and red light therapy split into two different jobs.
What the Red Light Therapy Studies Show
Red light, in the 630 to 660 nanometre range, penetrates roughly 5mm into the skin, working on collagen, circulation, and cellular energy at the surface and mid-dermis. Near-infrared light, between 850 and 940 nanometres, reaches much deeper, up to around 50-100mm (depending on product irradiance intensity levels), supporting recovery and reducing inflammation at depth. Both wavelengths are absorbed by mitochondria, prompting skin cells to produce more cellular energy in the form of ATP. That extra energy appears to drive fibroblasts, the cells responsible for making collagen, to work harder.
A 2014 controlled trial published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery followed 136 volunteers through 30 sessions of red and near-infrared LED treatment over 15 weeks. Researchers measured collagen density using ultrasound and found a significant increase in the treated groups compared with untreated controls, alongside improved skin roughness and complexion on blinded photographic assessment.
A separate study combining a lab-grown skin model with a split-face human trial, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, found that pulsed 660nm LED treatment increased type-I procollagen levels by roughly a third and reduced collagen-degrading MMP-1 by around 18% compared with untreated skin. In the clinical arm, more than 90% of participants showed a measurable reduction in wrinkle depth.
A more recent randomised trial published in Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery split the faces of 137 women between 40 and 65, treating one side with 660nm red light and the other with 590nm amber light over 10 sessions. The red light side showed roughly a 30% reduction in periocular, or "crow's feet," wrinkle volume, reinforcing 660nm as the strongest-performing wavelength for structural skin improvement.
What the Green Tea Studies Show

Green tea's benefit comes almost entirely from its catechins, and specifically EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG is a strong antioxidant, but its more interesting property for wrinkles is that it directly inhibits the MMP enzymes that break down collagen, while also encouraging fibroblasts to produce more procollagen.
A 2022 systematic review of clinical studies on oral green tea preparations, published in Nutrients, found consistent evidence of improved antioxidant skin defences and reduced signs of photoageing across the trials it examined, though the authors noted the overall pool of human studies remains relatively small.
One human trial comparing standard green tea extract with a tannase-converted form, which increases bioavailability, found a 36.3% improvement in wrinkle appearance with the standard extract, and a 63.6% improvement with the tannase-converted version, after topical application.
Laboratory studies on human skin fibroblasts, summarised in a 2024 review in Antioxidants, show EGCG measurably reduces MMP-1 and MMP-3 expression, the two enzymes most responsible for collagen breakdown, while simultaneously increasing type-I collagen and procollagen output. The same review links green tea catechins to protecting fibulin-5, a protein that helps keep skin elastic.
It's worth being upfront here: most of the strongest EGCG data comes from cell culture and animal studies, with a smaller but growing set of human trials. It's a genuinely well-supported ingredient, but it isn't a same-week fix, and it works best as a consistent daily habit rather than an occasional treatment.
Why Pairing Them May Outperform Either One Alone

Red light therapy and green tea attack the wrinkle problem from opposite ends. Red light energises fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Green tea's EGCG blocks the enzymes trying to break that collagen back down, and mops up the free radicals that light-based and everyday oxidative stress can generate. Used together, one is building while the other is protecting the work.
There's also a practical mechanism worth knowing. Light-based treatments have been shown to transiently increase skin permeability, meaning topical actives applied around a session may absorb more effectively than they otherwise would. A supporting 24-week trial published via PubMed tested a home-use light-based device combined with topical antioxidants against the device used alone, for photodamaged facial skin, and found the combination side showed enhanced improvement in fine lines and photodamage markers.
Some brand-run consumer testing, which isn't independently peer-reviewed, reports antioxidant serums roughly doubling to tripling LED results for wrinkle and elasticity metrics compared with LED alone. That figure is best treated as an internal brand result rather than clinical-grade evidence, but the underlying mechanism it's built on lines up with the peer-reviewed research above.
Building a Simple At-Home Routine
Start by cleansing thoroughly, removing makeup, SPF, and any active skincare like retinol or acids. Light penetrates clean skin far more effectively than skin with product residue sitting on top.
Next, apply your green tea serum. A serum or extract with a meaningful EGCG concentration, applied to slightly damp skin, tends to absorb best. A cooled, brewed green tea compress works as a low-cost alternative while you're building the habit.
Then run your red light session. Most clinical protocols use somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes at 660nm, with or without near-infrared. Hold the device at the recommended distance and wear the eye protection provided.
Once the session is done, lock it in with a second layer of serum or a moisturiser, applied while the skin is temporarily more receptive to actives.
Consistency matters more than any single session. Photobiomodulation is cumulative, and most people report visible changes in skin texture and fine lines somewhere between 4 and 12 weeks of consistent use, done 3 to 5 times a week, rather than after one treatment.
