Worried about receding gums?

Receding gums are one of the most common reasons people come to us. You notice teeth looking longer, gaps near the gum line, sensitivity to cold, or gums that bleed and look puffy.

Recession has several causes, including brushing too hard. But a large study on the causes of gingival recession found that the most common one was dental plaque build-up, which means bacteria. When harmful bacteria sit at the gum line, the gums become inflamed, the tissue weakens and the gum line can start to pull back.

• Deal with the bacteria driving the inflammation. That's the job of 460nm blue.

When harmful bacteria take over, the trouble starts: inflamed, bleeding and receding gums, persistent bad breath, and tissue that struggles to heal.

A poor oral microbiome is where many diseases begin.

British functional dentist Dr Victoria Sampson (BDS MFDS RCS Ed), known as "the Saliva Queen", has highlighted that more than 90% of all diseases can be traced back to our microbiomes. We now understand that an imbalanced oral microbiome increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility and many other conditions.

Studies confirm that bad bacteria cultivated in the mouth spread to the gut microbiome and beyond, even as far as the brain:

• Brain and Alzheimer's disease. In a landmark study published in Science Advances, Porphyromonas gingivalis, the keystone bacterium in chronic gum disease, was identified in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, together with its toxic enzymes. This is one of the clearest signs of the oral–gut–brain axis at work.
• Parkinson's disease. Research in npj Parkinson's Disease found oral and gut dysbiosis in people with Parkinson's, and a systematic review describes oral dysbiosis as a risk factor and aggravating element for the disease.
• Fertility. A recent review found a higher prevalence of gum disease in patients with infertility, and a review on periodontitis and female fertility links gum disease with longer time to conception and pregnancy complications. For couples planning a family, a healthy mouth matters.

That's why an oral light needs to deal with the bacteria and repair the tissue, not just one or the other.

Why one wavelength isn't enough

Each wavelength does a different job in your mouth. Leave one out and that job doesn't get done.

What blue-only devices can't do

Blue light in the 400–470nm range has been studied for its ability to kill microbes without drugs. A review of antimicrobial blue light notes that the periodontal pathogens Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis are susceptible to blue light. A study in Scientific Reports showed that blue light acts on a pigment already inside P. gingivalis, one of the best-known bacteria linked to gum disease, without adding any photosensitiser. Laboratory research on periodontal pathogens has also found phototoxic effects of blue light on anaerobic bacteria in both free-floating and biofilm form.

But blue light works at the surface. It doesn't calm inflamed gum tissue, help ulcers heal, or support collagen. A blue-only whitening kit goes after the bacteria and leaves the tissue on its own.

What red-only devices can't do

Red light helps calm inflammation and supports healing at the gum line. On its own, though, it doesn't reach very deep. Near-infrared (850nm) is the wavelength that goes deeper into tissue, where cellular strength, blood flow and repair happen. Research on photobiomodulation with red and near-infrared light has looked at the anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects of combining the two in periodontal care.

A red-only device leaves out that deeper layer, and it has no blue light either, so it does nothing for the bacteria.

Blue goes after the bacteria. Red calms the tissue. Near-infrared repairs it from deeper down. You need all three.

Wire-free, so there's nothing to fail

Many oral light devices have to stay plugged in while you use them, with a cable running from your mouth to a controller or the wall. Read the reviews of those products and one complaint comes up again and again: the wiring fails. A frayed cable or a loose connection and the device stops working, and becomes useless.

How to use ORISLED

1. Charge it. Plug the USB-C cable into the case, then into the supplied ORISLED adaptor. A green light flashes while it charges and stays solid when it's full. It's wireless and rechargeable, with no cords while you use it.
2. Place it in your mouth. For whitening, apply the included gel first. Rest the mouthpiece against your teeth and gums and switch it on.
3. Choose your mode and relax for 9 minutes. Use blue only for the full 9 minutes, red + NIR for the full 9 minutes, or split it: about 4.5 minutes of blue, then press again to switch to red + NIR for the remaining 4.5 minutes. Press once for blue (whitening mode), press twice for red + NIR (oral health mode). Read, work or unwind while it runs.
4. Put it back in the case. The case sanitises it with UV-A light and recharges it for your next session.
